For years, merchants have pushed back against the rising cost of credit card acceptance, which has increased 24% for Visa and Mastercard rewards cards in just four years. Finally, there’s relief. Business owners no longer have to pay the hefty costs associated accepting credit cards.
In January of 2013, a Supreme Court ruling enabled businesses of all sizes and industry sectors to do what universities, cell phone carriers, public utility companies, major grocery store chains, and government municipalities had long been permitted to do for many years: pass on to the shopper all fees associated with accepting credit cards at the point-of-sale.
- Credit cards are processed at 0.00% discount rate + $0.00 per transaction.
- Debit cards are processed at 1% + .25 cents per transaction price.
**This new federal law does not apply to bank-issued debit cards or prepaid cards, only credit cards.
Is the 3.5% surcharge a concern to the shopper?
The answer is, no. The small surcharge passed on to the shopper is not an issue of concern. The fee equates to approximately $.03 cents on a $1.00 purchase. Certainly, not an issue customers will lose sleep over.
In the video shown above, you are looking at a website shopping cart ‘payment form’. The credit card processing fee is fully disclosed to the shopper in compliance with federal law. The fee is also published on the customer receipt.
At the time of purchase, the shopper is informed of the fee amount and always has the freedom to choose a no-fee option by processing the sale as a debit card. The freedom to pay by credit card or debit creates a hassle-free, no loss scenario for the merchant and the shopper.
Credit Card Surcharges vs. Convenience Fees
Some businesses charge convenience fees to shoppers who prefer to use a credit card. That’s illegal. For example, a merchant might charge a convenience fee when you pay over the phone instead of online.
On the other hand, a ‘surcharge’, when applied in compliance with Visa and MasterCard regulations is an entirely different process and its legal.
Our surcharge is a flat rate of 3.5% which is passed on to the credit card holder for the explicit purpose of covering the cost of a credit card transaction. There are no extra fees or over-inflated costs.

No Hidden Fees
Whether your company processes as little as $3,000 in monthly Visa and MasterCard transactions or well over $30,000,000 million, our Zero Cost Credit© program means that your company will never pay discount rates and transaction fees again.
How Does It Work?
There’s nothing a business owner needs to do differently. When the consumer is ready to pay, simply run the credit card through the credit card terminal, a wireless mobile device or your website shopping cart and the surcharge fee is automatically added to the transaction.
